Detox Diet Wrap-Up: 11 lbs later…

It just hit me: I didn’t blog about the conclusion of my most recent experience with The Detox Diet. My, oh my…how were you able to sleep at night with this building suspense?
If you’ve kept up with any of my blogging through the detox you know I’ve kept the weight loss/aesthetic perks on the back burner. I really didn’t want anyone to hop on the Detox Diet as a quick fix, when the focus needs to be on health, cleansing and rejuvenation. But this morning I thought, what if sharing this success is the catalyst to inspire you (yes, I’m a talkin’ to you!) to finally take action and take control of your health? So hear ye, hear ye: I lost eleven pounds in 14 days on the program which ended for me on Sunday, and not a single pound has reappeared since ending the program. My pants are literally falling off, and even at class last night two of my girls commented on my slenderousity. Did I have eleven pounds to lose? Obviously my body thought so, otherwise it wouldn’t have released it. This isn’t your typical “diet” where foods are scarce and calories are counted. I actually increased my calorie content and fat grams by at least 30%, but I was fueling properly with organic, highly alkaline food choices. Food = fuel, and when give our bodies nutrient dense foods, it restores balance to every system. Restoration for me meant increased energy, complete mental clarity, and eleven pounds of weight dismissed. I’ll take it!

First, don’t bother with cleanses. We’re always hungry for that quick detox fix or next superfood like the Acai berry. Fifty-four new food and beverage products debuted in 2008 with the word “detox” in their descriptions. Many of these pills, fasting kits, and juice regimens will promote short-term weight loss because you are consuming far fewer calories, but the pounds usually return afterwards. Your body is pretty good at flushing out the toxins on its own, provided you avoid nicotine, caffeine, sugar, and alcohol… and take in plenty of fiber and fluid to help keep things moving on their merry way.
1. Eat Red Peppers: this spicy addition to a meal can help rev up your metabolism; it’s also a good source of vitamins A, C, B6, folate, potassium, vitamin E, vitamin K and fiber.
2. Replace Your Snacks with Soups: Swapping out two typical daily snacks for two servings of soup may result in up to a 50 percent greater weight loss among overweight dieters–even if the soup and the snacks have the same exact number of calories. Your best bet is to go with soups rich in vegetables and low in sodium.
3. Drink Lots of Water: Drop more pounds faster by drinking two cups of water before each meal. You’ve probably heard that drinking water before you eat can help you lose weight, the theory behind this recommendation is that the water helps fill you up so that you end up eating less at mealtime, which leads to fewer calories consumed in the day.
4. Drink Green Tea: Chemicals in green tea, along with caffeine, are thought to burn fat and reduce weight. They also improve body measurement parameters like body mass index, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio. Try replacing your morning cup of coffee with green tea and have another cup later in the day for an afternoon pick-me-up.
5. Make Sure you Drink Your Milk: People trying to lose weight might have greater success if they have higher intakes of calcium from dairy products (e.g. milk, cheese, yogurt) and higher levels of vitamin D in their blood. Make sure you’re drinking low-fat or skim milk and try Greek yogurt since it has more protein than regular. Also, avoid flavored yogurts since they are just loaded with sugar.
When you Get the Weight Off, Keep It Off: Exercise is your best bet to make sure that the pounds you shed stay off. Set a limit for yourself. If you find yourself gaining more then 5 pounds, it’s time to get back on track. If you don’t like scales, simply use your clothes. If they are feeling tight, it’s time to get moving.

What we refer to today as holistic Medicine is usually the use of unprocessed herbs and plant materials that may or may not provide a sort of “cure” for illnesses. these herbs are often combined with either traditional or newly developed treatment methods that are often said to surpass the methods used by formal medical professionals.

In 2004 the FDA banned ephedra, a Chinese weight-loss herb, after it was linked to more than 100 deaths. in addition to this, the popular Ayurvedic supplements, which are based on Indian and South Asian practices, often contain dangerous heavy metals including lead and mercury.
I’m sure many of you have heard the traditional remedy of rubbing butter on a burn, right? did you know that butter actually promotes bacterial growth in the burn, and promotes infection? the butter may sooth the pain momentarily, but it actually promotes and speeds up the rate of infection.
Aside from the plant itself, you also have to be aware the dangers of overdose. many chemicals that your physician prescribes you are helpful at a certain dose, and harmful at a slightly larger dose. an herbal dealer most likely doesn’t have the chemistry background to accurately provide the level of active ingredients and the equipment to measure and calculate the appropriate dosage.
For a large part, holistic medicine is based on a placebo effect. If you think it’s working then your brain can actually make you feel better. a large part of these herbs and poultices will hurt your pocketbook much worse than your body. however, before you try your next traditional remedy it would be wise to do your research into how exactly the ingredients react with the human body.
If you happen to indulge in some of the more potent “cures” on the holistic market, it may be the last decision you ever make.
