Healing Your Liver Naturally With Food
The most glamorous part of your body is definitely not your liver, but it is a hard worker. Many of its functions include protein synthesis, detox, and the production of biochemicals used for digestion. It may not be glamorous, but it is very important: You can't live without this body part. If you want to be healthy, keep your liver functioning well as it should.
For most people, the liver is not really on our to-do list in regards to health concerns. However, when looking at it, you may decide that it does deserve much more of our attention and a bit more care. So how can you help your liver?
I wanted to figure out how to fix this problem and decided to begin a detox. Cleaning and detoxing the body always seems like a great idea.
However, after looking at WebMD, I have been convinced otherwise. Many of the detox diets for natural detoxification doesn't have enough science to support them. They can also be very restrictive and cause some harm.
The most restrictive of diets can be a detox diet, especially a little while. If there is any fasting involved, this can become addictive and also slow the metabolism; people tend to like that "high" feeling it gives off. You are also depriving your body of important nutrients. If you fall into the following categories, this type of diet may be impossible: chronic conditions, heart issues, eating disorders, low blood sugar or diabetes, a senior, a teenager, a child, pregnancy or breastfeeding.
In regards to caring for my liver, I gave this less of an aggressive approach with much care. I went to go find out what the liver actually needs and not what I think it needs.
Find out what is good for the liver. Here are several food choices that are free of radicals and promotes detoxification naturally:
Apples have pectin that actually attracts itself to different metals that are pushed through the body for excretion.
Artichokes are known for increasing the production of bile that assists with the movement of toxins through the bowels.
Beets contain folate (an important type of B vitamin that needs to be consumed daily) and, when eaten regularly, help cleanse the liver.
Any bitter leafy green such as, dandelion, endive, chicory, etc, will help you in stimulating bile flow.
Cruciferous vegetables (e.g., broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower) contain phytochemicals to breakdown toxins as well as help the liver produce the enzymes it needs for detoxification.
Garlic contains a substance called allicin, which is similar to a sulfur compound that provides the liver assistance with removing mercury and other additives from foods. Garlic pills are great if you don't like the smell.
The following fruits (grapefruit, prunes, blueberries, raisins, cantaloupe, oranges, and pears) all contain essential antioxidants. Eat 3 servings a day for the best outcome.
So, you can maintain a healthy liver without torturing yourself. From this list of foods, I'd even say the process might be enjoyable. Healthy liver. Happy me. Win. Win.
